On average the School puts out between 16 and 19 hockey teams per week across four age groups. The School competes against many of the other top boys’ schools in Johannesburg as well as countrywide.

KES takes part in the annual Nomads Hockey Festival. This festival is where the top hockey schools from across the country meet annually for a three-day hockey festival across three age groups. Added to this, King Edward host VII School own annual Easter Sports festival where schools from all over South Africa arrive to play in four days of action packed hockey over the Easter weekend.

Through the years KES has produced many hockey coaches and national, provincial and South African Schools players. Through the ranks the school produces many provincial and South African Schools players.

King Edward prides itself on its hockey facilities. Initially hockey was played on two well-maintained grass fields. In 1999 the School laid an artificial surface for hockey on the North Field. This surface was upgraded in 2010. In 2017 lights and a hockey pavilion, with change rooms and a viewing deck, were added. 2018 saw the introduction of an artificial surface warm-up area which doubles up as cricket nets in summer.

As a sport hockey continues the proud traditions of the School, promoting well-rounded individuals who not only achieve on the hockey field, but in all walks of life.
